Review

I ADORE this book. Grace and Sebastian are just too freaking cute. I love that they’re both nerdy bluestocking wallflowers (or whatever the man version of a bluestocking wallflower is…) and they’re trying to give Sebastian a rake makeover (or rake-over, if you will…) using a super out of date book. In a society where it’s noticeable when women wear last season’s dresses, they look at this old-ass book on etiquette and go “Oh, how much could have changed in, like, forty years after all?” And then Rotherby! When he comes in and sees what they’re up to, the amount of sass in him! This book had me laughing until tears were blinding me too much to keep reading.

I’m something of a sucker for a fake relationship trope, especially when one party is already secretly in love with the other. I love those moments that are completely real, but both parties are convinced the other person is just really good at pretending. They make me laugh and also stab my heart with a thousand tiny pins. There were definitely several parts where I found myself crying, and any book that can make me cry both from laughing and from my heart feeling like I swallowed an anvil is one that’s pretty excellent in my book.

This is the first book in the Union of Rakes series and can be read as a stand alone. I can’t wait to read more in this series, especially about the Duke of Rotherby because he is a HOOT. I’m hoping in future books we get more about how the Union of Rakes all came to be such close friends that they remain friends into adulthood, despite being very different people when they met in school.
